OFSTED focus on teaching Phonics in Early Years

Posted on December 2, 2019

The new Ofsted framework which came into effect in September 2019 affects every school in the country.

A key focus will be on early reading and the teaching of phonics in primary schools. Primary schools who can demonstrate a focus on phonics as a transition into independent reading will be rewarded with higher grades.

In the new 2019 framework, ‘quality of education’ will replace the old ‘outcomes for pupils’. The shift away from outcomes measures and move towards an analysis of the quality of provision makes it easier for OFSTED to recognise and reward the good work done by schools in areas of high disadvantage.

Hackney Learning Trust are helping to support our schools to prepare for the teaching of phonics. A session for men has been scheduled for Monday 13th  January from 1pm to 3pm and aims to offer a basic introduction to the actual teaching of Phonics in the Early Years. The session will offer many practical ideas in order to apply the principles underpinning the promotion of phonological awareness. The  focus will be on working with children aged 3-5, and will refer to Phase One of Letters and Sounds.
